Jumpstart Your Caregiving Career and Become a Home Health Aide

Is it your passion in life to give back to others? Have you experienced personal satisfaction from bringing others happiness? If this sounds like you, have you ever considered a career in professional caregiving? Maybe you’ve been a primary caregiver your whole life. You’ve had children, raised them into wonderful adults, and wondered what’s next. Or perhaps you are the primary caregiver for an elderly parent or loved one who takes comfort in knowing that a trusted family member is there when they need it. No matter your experience level, if you are hardworking, compassionate, and determined to make the lives of seniors better, seriously consider a career in professional caregiving as a Certified Home Health Aide.

I’m interested, where do I start?

The New Jersey Care Pro is a 60-hour theory and didactic training course, offered in an online interactive format. It’s flexible and easily accessible which is convenient for people with hectic schedules. In addition to the course, you will be supervised in 16 hours of clinical skills in an on-site skills lab. To complete the course and get your certification you will complete a 1-hour proctored exam, which has different test dates based on your session. A staff member will be there to guide you, answer any questions you may have, and ensure you are completing the courses according to schedule! To break it down for you, this is what you will be completing:

  • A 2-hour orientation at a site location

  • 60 hours of online training

  • Skills Training in person (2 days/16 Hours)

  • 1 Hour proctored exam at site location by appointment

While the hours may seem considerable, you’ll actually only have to spend a little over three days in order to be certified. Three days is minuscule in comparison to a lifetime career.

Besides the personal satisfaction of being able to help others, becoming a Home Health Aide will put you in a great position for employment. With the Baby Boomer generation reaching old age and needing care, the U.S. is facing a caregiver gap that is only expected to increase. According to estimates by AARP, there are around seven potential caregivers for each person aged 80 or older. They expect that by 2030, there will only be only 4. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects employment of healthcare occupations to grow 18% from 2016 to 2026, which is significantly faster than other occupations. This increase is expected to add approximately 2.3 million jobs. With an increased need for a larger caregiver force, your services will be in high demand!

So I’ve completed the course, now what?

After you’ve received your training and passed the exam portion, you are now eligible to apply for a certification as a Home Health Aide with the New Jersey Board of Nursing. The helpful staff of Pawson Career Institute will be there to guide each student through the application process as well as answer any and all questions regarding the certification.
