A Family's Story of Compassion and Care in the Home

A graduate of Rider University and an accountant for IBM Corporation of Dayton and Washington, DC; Ronald Pawson was a vibrant, successful young man. He was a husband, a father to two young children, had just bought his first house, and was fast-tracking with a global Fortune 500 company.
In 1982, Ron was diagnosed with Chronic Progressive Multiple Sclerosis.
Over the course of the next 30 years, Ron became confined to his bed as he continued to lose function over his body, an unfamiliar and frightening symptom of his disease. Despite his diagnosis, Ron always seemed cheerful. Visits to his nursing home made it evident that Ron found value in the small things; a result of great companionship and perspectives from his caregivers.
Ron spent nearly three decades there, before his passing in 2008 due to complications from his diagnosis.
Ron requested that his caregivers be mentioned in his obituary, along with his family.
A graduate of St. Peter’s High School in New Brunswick, NJ, Barbara went on to earn her MBA from Rider University, where she met her Husband, Ron. Barbara taught at Rider University and later retired as a Financial Planner for IBM Corporation.
"In the 1980s, caring for chronically ill family members in the home was neither common nor affordable; and although we worked tirelessly to find help, we were ultimately forced to send him to live in a nursing home".
After Ron's passing in 2008, Barbara found the most joy in spending time and cooking with her family. She is survived by her two children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
From Barbara's Last Wishes:
"During the bad times from when Ron was first diagnosed
until he died, I couldn't have gotten through in one piece without each and every one of you - Children and grandchildren, brothers and sisters, friends and sometimes, even strangers.
If it's at all possible, I'd like to be buried with Ron in New Jersey. The plot has been paid for and has space for two graves already. He and I missed so much time together that I'd like to make it up to him now. I can't imagine a better way to go through eternity than to spend it with him".
Ron and Barbara's children and grandchildren are now the founders of several in-home care agencies and healthcare training schools/programs across the East Coast.
Most recently, their Daughter, Stephanie, founded the New Jersey Caregiver Academy, a Home Health Aide training program . Their Granddaughter, Kelsey, recently founded Pawson Career Institute, a Health Career Training School.
Their efforts are all made in the commitment to ensure that other families have an equal opportunity to receive safe, compassionate, and affordable healthcare services.
They hope that the story of Ron and Barbara will continue to inspire individuals of the importance that quality caregiving brings to the lives of so many in need.
